Avro U14 Girls are to play American based side Alaska DP as part of the American side’s UK tour.
Alaska DP are taking on a number of sides including an undisclosed top London team, QPR Girls, and our very own Avro Girls. The game takes place at The Vestacare Stadium on 10th March at 16:00.
Kevin Pomeroy, coach of the U13s and U14s, is excited by the prospect: ‘To take on a side from the States who are also playing some top sides is a big moment for the club. The girls can’t wait to get out on the pitch and show what they can do.’
Last season, the U13s won the Sunday League and Manchester Christmas Cup, with a majority of the team being made up of girls who weren’t getting game time at other clubs. This season, the U13s are in the semi-finals of the County Cup with them, and both sides are top of their respective leagues.
Kev wanted to encourage girls who may be thinking about leaving the game to reconsider:
“A lot of our players are ones who weren’t playing at other teams, they’ve come here and are enjoying playing week in week out. We ask girls to come down for a few weeks and see how they do, how they feel about the club. Most do stay, but we lose a few and that is a shame. We instil a winning mentality and never give up attitude in the players, which means we get the best results possible. The girls love it.’
