Bury AFC Preview

Avro will endeavour to bounce back from their 1-0 loss away at Prestwich Heys as they resume league duties with a third consecutive local derby, this time at the Neuven Stadium in Radcliffe against Bury AFC.

A late goal from Joe Rothwell was enough to earn Heys the local bragging rights until the two sides meet again in March, and after also losing to Wythenshawe Town the previous Saturday, Avro will be keen to prevent a hat trick of defeats.

The Opposition

Bury AFC were founded in 2019 as a phoenix club of Bury FC, who were expelled from the Football League. They have therefore only played one full season because of the two COVID curtailed campaigns, but last year they finished top of the pile in the First Division North, suffering just one loss in their 36 league fixtures.

Bury have started this season’s campaign in fine form and although they currently sit in ninth place, they have games in hand on every side in the league. The Shakers have taken 18 points from a potential 27 up for grabs this season.

Away from the league, they have managed to win through to the FA Cup fourth qualifying round, in which they will play York City.

Head to Head

Unsurprisingly the two sides have never faced each other in any competition.  However, we have come up against four of the same opponents so far in the 22-23 campaign in Prestwich Heys, Congleton Town, Lower Breck and Padiham, and both sides have taken six points from a potential twelve. The clubs have victory against Padiham and defeat to Heys in common.

One to Watch

Lewis Gilboy was initially at AFC Liverpool after being released by Accrington Stanley, but ultimately the Liverpudlian has made his home in Bury where he has been since 2020.

The wide man has been a big success in that time, scoring 25 goals and also contributing ten assists in his 66 appearances. This season has been his best of the lot as he has scored 12 times in 16 games, thus putting him at the top of the club’s goalscoring charts.
