Charnock Richard Preview

Our 3-1 victory at The Community Ground on Tuesday night means we remain in third place in the table going into today’s encounter with Charnock Richard.

A difficult night in Burscough thankfully ended with three points thanks to goals from Kane Wallwork, Lee Knight and  Liam Ellis, which meant that we maintained our 100% record on the road in the league. Our next challenge is to get back to winning ways at the Vestacare, having suffered our first defeat of the season against Congleton Town ten days ago.

The Opposition

Charnock Richard had a very impressive 2021/2022 campaign, finishing in a superb fourth position on 78 points – 16 points above Avro. They were in contention for second place and thus a crack at the promotion play-offs on the last day of the season, but Skelmersdale’s win meant that they missed out by one point. Their attack was key to their success, as they scored an amazing 106 goals, the highest in the league. They also won the Macron Cup in May, beating Cammell Laird 5-0 in the final.

Their results this season have not quite been at the same level, but they have faced a number of the better sides in the division and have still only lost twice in their first seven games. They have again had no trouble finding the net, with 15 goals in the league and 16 more in just four cup ties.

Head to Head

Last season, we faced tomorrow’s opposition twice in our league campaign and both times the home side came away with three points. The first encounter came over a year ago in August and thanks to goals from Danny Byrnes, Oumar Camara and Bailey Sloane, Avro came away with a deserved victory despite the visitors scoring twice late on to set up a tense finish.

The second battle came towards the end of the season in March, and the closely fought affair unfortunately did not turn out how we would have liked as Charnock Richard took the three points with a 2-0 win. An unfortunate own goal by Josh Ollerenshaw and a penalty was all that separated the two teams on the night.
