After just one defeat in six in their preseason programme, the Ro kick off the 23-24 season with a trip to a familiar foe in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup. Almost a year ago to the day, a 4-0 win was recorded at the same stage of the competition against Irlam as we eventually progressed to a first ever appearance in the first qualifying round.
The opposition
Emley play in the NCEL Premier Division, which is the same level of the non-league pyramid at which we were competing in the North West Counties League until our promotion to step 4 in April. Their league season has therefore already started, and after a goalless draw at Maltby Main on the opening day last weekend, they drew 1-1 on Tuesday night against visitors Garforth Town.
Last time we met
With the exception of our league fixtures against Vauxhall Motors, the FA Cup is the only competition which is likely to provide us with material for this section! The two sides have met just once before, as their paths did not cross during Emley’s brief stay in the NWCFL. That was last August in the FA Vase, when the Ro fought back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw. However, we subsequently lost the penalty shootout to end our involvement in the competition.
Look out for….
Forward Ruben Jerome scored 38 goals during a three year spell with Workington Reds in the NPL Division One West, and his decision to leave the club this summer was motivated more by the pressures of travelling from his West Yorkshire home than any sudden loss of form. He will need to be very carefully marshalled by the Ro defence to ensure that he does not open his account for his new side tomorrow afternoon.
