Macclesfield 6 Avro 0

A tiring Avro side conceded three goals in the last quarter of an hour as champions Macclesfield made hay while the Cheshire sun shone with a 6-0 victory in front of more than 4000 fans at the Leasing.com stadium.

Manager Alex Frost made three changes from the side which had started the previous league encounter against Vauxhall Motors. Luke Horrocks made his debut at left back in place of the suspended Kane Wallwork, whilst Callum Nicholas retained his place in midfield after an impressive performance in the midweek Macron Cup win at Golcar United. Louis Potts was also passed fit to start up front, meaning that Liam Ellis dropped back into midfield and Matthew Wolfenden started on the bench.

The home side started strongly but after weathering the storm in the opening minutes, the remainder of the first half hour was a very even affair.  However, the deadlock was broken when James Berry raced onto a through ball, and although his left foot shot looked likely to be kept out by Josh Ollerenshaw, it took a deflection off a defender and looped into the net.

The second goal arrived in first half injury time, with Berry notching his second from the spot after Andre Owens was adjudged to have been brought down in the box. After the break, there was again little to choose between the two sides for the first twenty minutes, but the floodgates opened once Callum West had fired a low shot past Ollerenshaw from the edge of the area. Berry completed his hat trick with another penalty before Avro substitute Kyle Jacobs rattled the bar with a twenty five yarder, and goals in additional time from Kiwomya and a fourth for Berry completed the rout.

So overall an afternoon to forget for Frost’s men, and they now have a ten day period in which to recharge their batteries before a big local derby in the second round of the Macron Cup against Abbey Hey on Wednesday March 30th.
