Match Preview: Avro – Guiseley

Avro look to keep up the good form in the league as the Ro welcome Guiseley AFC to the Vestacare Stadium. Last time out for Avro, it was a 5-3 win over Lancaster City at the Vestacare Stadium, with this win the Ro continue their great form even without Grant Shenton in the dugout, as he has moved on from the club to join Radcliffe, and former manager Alex Frost taking over on an interim basis.

Since 2022, Guiseley AFC have been stuck in the Northern Premier League Premier Division after finishing rock bottom of the National League North in the 2021/2022 season. Last season, Guiseley finished in 13th place finishing eight points above the relegation zone and 15 points below the playoff places. Guiseley AFC come into this game after beating a struggling Ilkeston 2-0 away from home.

Your support would be much appreciated this Saturday as the players, interim Manager Alex Frost and everyone at the club need you to support the club as we look to keep this good form going and as we look for a new manager.

Guiseley AFC:

Founded in 1909, Guiseley AFC have had a great history, reaching the fifth tier of the English Pyramid, one promotion away from being an EFL Club. Their early years saw the club play in the West Yorkshire and Yorkshire League until 1981, when the Yorkshire League merged with the Midlands League to form the Northern Counties Eastern League and luckily for the Lions they were placed in the Premier Division. In the 1990/1991 campaign, Guiseley won the Northern Counties Eastern League Premier Division, securing promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One. It wouldn’t take long for Guiseley to earn promotion from the NPL Division One as in 1993/1994, they won the title and secured their place in the 1995//1996 NPL Premier Division. After earning that promotion, Guiseley AFC were performing excellently well in the FA Cup, qualifying for the first round proper for multiple years in a row, where they played the likes of Carlies United, Forest Green Rovers, and Luton Town. In the 2009/2010 campaign, the Lions won the NPL Premier Division title and earned promotion to the Conference North, now known as the National League North. From 2010 to 2015, Guiseley finished in the playoff places in the division but always fell short of the ultimate goal of promotion to the National League; they lost to the likes of Telford United, Nuneaton Town, Halifax Town, and Altrincham FC. Finally, in the 2014/2015 season, they made the playoffs once again, but this time won in the playoff final, defeating AFC Fylde to earn promotion to the National League and being one step away from the EFL. However, after that promotion, it has been downhill for the Lions, suffering relegation back to the National League North in 2018 and suffering a second relegation in 2019 to the Northern Premier League Premier Division where they have remained every since.

Head to Head:

Avro and Guiseley have faced each other in the past more than a few times, with the last competitive fixture happening in 2022 in the FA Cup First Round Qualifying. Unfortunately, for the Ro, it was a 2-1 loss.
