Avro continue their European venture in the Fenix Trophy on Wednesday night, 5th March when we welcome Norwegian side FC Oslo to The Vestacare. This fixture returns to the traditional format of a 2-leg tie, so The Ro will be looking to take a lead to the return leg, which will be played in Oslo next Monday, 10th March.
Avro booked their place in the next round of the Fenix Trophy with a convincing win over Finnish side Gilla FC last time out. David Birch and Mike Norton named a strong starting eleven and showed clear intention of their ambitions for this competition. After goals from Jamie Rainford and Kyle Hawley, The Ro had one foot on progression heading into the break 2-0 up. The attacking threat continued in the second half which saw Avro double their lead and went 4-0 up through Liam Ellis and Sam Davidson. Despite the dominant display from Avro, Gilla ensured that they didn’t leave empty handed. A goal from Duarte Tammilehto and a piece of individual brilliance from Mosa saw Gilla score 2. Ultimately, it was Avro who progressed to the next round in a 6-2 victory.
It was a healthy crowd of 276 for our fixture against Gilla and we’d love to go one better and up this attendance once more. We would love to accommodate as many fans as possible into The Vestacare on Wednesday night as we look to take a big a lead as possible to Oslo next Monday. FC Oslo will arrive at The Vestacare with confidence after their own dominant display last time out against Krakow Dragoons. A 6-0 home win saw FC Oslo take a comfortable lead to Poland for the reverse fixture in Krakow and they didn’t hold back, coming out 1-7 winners. Overall, a 13-1 aggregate victory shows that Avro can’t take their opponents lightly.
FC Oslo are yet to commence their league season yet with their first fixture scheduled for 29thMarch at home to Frigg. So, they can use this competition as a good way to gain match fitness ahead of their league season. Avro aren’t short of match fitness with The Ro having regular league fixtures in recent weeks. Most recently, a convincing 3-1 home victory against Clitheroe last Saturday. Avro also have a league fixture in between both of our ties with FC Oslo, with The Ro making the trip to face Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday before we make the early journey to Oslo on Sunday morning.
It proves to be an intriguing tie at The Vestacare so we would love as many as possible in attendance whether that’s showing support for The Ro or groundhopping to visit The Vestacare and be a part of a unique European competition at this level.
