Match Report: Avro 4-0 Clitheroe

Avro made it 6 league matches unbeaten and back-to-back wins at The Vestacare thanks to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Clitheroe last night. It was ultimate first half dominance from Avro which secured maximum points as all 4 goals came in the first half. A result which has been building over the past couple weeks.

Grant Shenton named two changes from Saturday’s victory against Wythenshawe Town with Fortune Maphosa and David Fitzpatrick replacing Deane Smalley and Adam Owen in the starting eleven. The bench also saw Jack Morrow and Darren Ehimamiegho named as both were being phased back from their recent injuries.

It was a fast start for Avro, and they were rewarded with a goal after 8th minute and, after his first NPL West goal at the weekend, Harry Salt soon found the taste for goals and his strike put The Ro ahead early on. Avro continued to build the pressure and create chances, and, on the 15-minute mark, they deservedly doubled their lead. Fortune Maphosa climbed the highest from the corner and headed past McCleneghan to put Avro 2-0 up.

A big disappointment for Avro on the 22nd minute when Harry Salt was forced off through an injury and he was replaced by Darren Ehimamiegho. We would like to wish Harry a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in an Avro shirt soon.

Avro continued to dominate the game and pile the pressure on the Clitheroe defence and were rewarded just past the half hour when who else than Kyle Hawley found the back of the net for his 8th league goal and 11th goal of the season so far. It was one of them evenings when everyone fancied getting their name on the scoresheet and, after his return from a long injury, Darren Ehimamiegho was next to convert for Avro and put them 4-0 ahead on the stroke of half time.

This rounded off the perfect half for Avro as Grant Shenton headed in for one of the more comfortable team talks at the break. This would force Sean McConville into four changes at the break as he looked to stem the Avro wave of attacks and goals.

The second half was relatively uneventful for both sides with Clitheroe looking a changed side defensively as they looked to prevent the scoreline getting any worse for them. Avro would continue to ask questions but knew they didn’t have to take any risks in pressing forwards.

There was controversy in the 67th minute as Danny Wilkins was shown a straight red card after a terrible challenge on Sam Davidson. Following the scuffle between both sides in reaction to this challenge, both Grant Shenton and Sean McConville were shown straight red cards from the match official. A sour point to what was the perfect evening from Avro apart from this.

There was a couple of late opportunities for both Jack Kenny and Ryley Smith, but both saw their efforts just wide of the post and this was how the rest of the match panned out for Avro as they comfortably held out to seal a 4-0 victory.

This result sees Avro rise to 4th in the league, a position reflective of their positive start to the league season. The Ro will look to extend their unbeaten run to 7 league games when we make the trip to face Congleton Town this weekend.
