After progressing to the preliminary round of the FA Cup last weekend thanks to a 2-0 success at NCEL Premier Division Emley, tomorrow we will play our first ever step 4 fixture in our 87 year history as our NPL Division One West campaign gets under way at the Vestacare Stadium.
The opposition
Arguably the fixture gods could not have handed us a tougher opponent against whom to begin life in our new surroundings. Nantwich Town spent fifteen years at step 3 of the non league pyramid between 2008 and this spring, during which time they reached the semi finals of the FA Trophy as well as three appearances in the first round proper of the FA Cup . Manager Paul Carden was appointed in February and despite being unable to stave off relegation, his side’s form in those last two months was enough to earn him a new two year contract. There is little doubt that the Dabbers are one of the preseason promotion favourites.
Look out for….
Back for his fourth spell at the Dabbers, Sean Cooke has scored 114 goals in 343 appearances from midfield in his three previous spells with the club. He has been top goal scorer at the club three times, most recently in 2021/22, and is the fifth highest scorer in Dabbers history. He was also a part of the League Team of the Season in 2018/19. In addition, Sean is a three time Cheshire Senior Cup winner and was a part of the only three Dabbers sides ever to make it to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, as well as that remarkable run to the FA Trophy semi-finals in 2016.
Last time we met….
Needless to say, this is the first time that the two sides have met in a competitive fixture. A historic occasion in more ways than one!
