Stockport Georgians Preview

After a disappointing penalty shootout which saw us knocked out of the Manchester Premier Cup on Wednesday night, attention now shifts to another knockout competition as we take on Stockport Georgians in the Macron Cup.

The Opposition

Stockport Georgians play their home games at Cromley Road and compete in the First Division South, one league below ourselves. They currently sit in an impressive fifth place in their first ever season of semi-professional football, taking 29 points from 17 games.  Stockport’s defence has been crucial to their great start as they have one of the best defensive records in the First Division South so far, earning themselves nine clean sheets along the way.

Head to Head

The sides played each other numerous times when both were competing in the Manchester League, and indeed Stockport Georgians were the opponents when Avro played their last ever league game at that level prior to joining NWCFL Division One North at the start of the 2018-19 season. On that day we managed to secure a comfortable 7-1 victory at the Vestacare to add to the 6-1 success at Cromley Road earlier in the season. One suspects that this afternoon might be a somewhat closer encounter!

One to Watch

Stockport have proven to be a very well rounded team when it comes to finding the net, with their goals coming from all areas of the pitch. However, striker Jack Woolley has probably had the best start to the season in that department, scoring five goals in his fourteen appearances. Jack joined Stockport this season from Lostock Graham and has adapted extremely well to the extra demands of semi-professional football – he will certainly need to be closely monitored by the Avro defence this afternoon.
