Avro 0 City of Liverpool 1

A sublime strike by Callum Schorah early in the second half was enough to secure a first league win of the season for the visitors, on a night when conversely Avro suffered their first defeat as well as conceding their first goal.

There was just one change to the starting line up from the 1-0 success at Prescot Cables the previous Tuesday, with James Dwyer making his debut at left back in the absence of Dom Smalley. The first half was a very even affair, with the home side edging it in terms of possession and territory, but they were unable to fashion a clear cut opportunity to break the deadlock.

Dylan Fitzgerald came closest to scoring when he rose highest to meet a Matty Crothers corner from the left, but his header flew inches over the crossbar. Connor Berry went close after being set up by a brilliant cross field pass from Fitzgerald, and Jack Morrow was also just off target with a deflected left foot effort from the edge of the area.

However, it was the visitors who provided the decisive moment of the ninety minutes with the first shot which either side had on target. Schorah found himself in space twenty five yards out just after the restart, and he curled a beautiful left foot shot into the top corner to give his side the lead.

Avro pushed hard for an equaliser, and visiting keeper Calvin Hare made two smart stops to keep out long range efforts from Berry and substitute Max McCarthy.

At the other end it took a superb save from Grant Shenton low to his left to stop Josh Quarless from doubling the lead, but it proved to be all in vain after first a home penalty appeal went unheeded, and then McCarthy’s header from a corner which looked to have made it 1-1 late on was disallowed by the referee.
