Litherland REMYCA 1 Avro 2

Avro beat bottom of the table Litherland REMYCA 2-1 thanks to a Jake Cottrell header and Michael Afuye goal.

Litherland scored early on thanks to a nicely worked goal.  They played a deadly ball through the Avro defence which saw their striker finish from a tight angle.

Avro responded well, piling pressure on the side who have only won twice this season.  Joe Rathbone nearly equalised just a few minutes later when he played a one-two with Afuye but was tackled before he could get a shot off, but the breakthrough came when Kyle Harrop swung in one of his trademark crosses, and Jake Cottrell rose above the Litherland defence to nod home his second of the season.

Avro continued to pile pressure on the Merseyside outfit, Potts trying an overhead kick from an Ellis cross, which was blocked by the defender.  However, it was Michael Afuye put Avro 2-1 up when he received the ball, made a run past a handful of Litherland defenders and fired it into the bottom corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.  Bailey Sloane nearly joined him on the scoresheet when he shot from the tightest of angles on the left, and was only denied by the fingertips of the goalkeeper.

Half-Time – Litherland REMYCA 1-2 Avro

The second half was not as action-packed as the first, with very few chances being created.  Cottrell whipped in a cross and Rathbone got his head to it but saw it rise just over the bar. Next the young midfielder created a good chance with ten minutes left of the game, when he fired the ball across the face of goal but Louis Potts could not get a clean connection on it.  Potts then nearly scored the goal of the month when Wood thumped the ball to him, he brought it down on his chest and hit it on the volley but saw it go over the bar.

Ultimately Avro managed to hold on to secure the win under difficult conditions.
