Match Preview: Bury – Avro

Avro look to return to winning ways as they make the short journey over to Gigg Lane to take on Bury FC for another Northern Premier League Premier Division Fixture. Last time out for the Ro, it was a narrow 1-0 defeat on the road to Cleethorpes Tow, who took the three points after an own goal in the second half.

Since the beginning of this season, Bury FC have been participating in the NPL Premier Division after earning promotion from the NPL Division One West. Last season, the Shakers won the title on the final day of the season after beating Atherton Collieries at the Collieries stadium, narrowly beating the Ro to the title as well. Last time out for Bury, it was a 2-1 loss at home to Workington FC, who earlier in the season were defeated by Bury 5-1 at Gigg Lane in the FA Cup.

It’s a big game, and your support would be much appreciated as the Ro looks to earn the three points against our former title rival!

Bury FC:

Founded in 1885, Bury FC have had one of the most fascinating and unfortunate history as a club. The Shakers began in the Lancashire League, but were very quickly elected into the Football League and stayed in the Football League for many years. During their time in the EFL before the era of the Premier League, Bury managed to win the FA Cup and found themselves as high as the First Division (what is now the Premier League), but would eventually become a well-known League One and League Two club starting around the 1970s. Unfortunately for the Shakers, the 2010s would be the beginning of the end as the club began to struggle with their finances and in 2012 the club received a transfer embargo while at the same time suffering relegation to League Two. After a few seasons of bouncing between League One and League Two while also dealing with their finances, in 2019 the club were expelled from the EFL after failing to provided proof of the club’s viability and owner Scott Dale not being able to broker a deal to sell the club. After Bury’s expulsion from the EFL, a brand new Bury was formed known as Bury AFC, who had to start from the bottom of the National League pyramid in Step 10. In 2024, Bury AFC and Bury FC (who still technically existed) merged into one club and the Shakers were reborn. Since the merger, Bury FC have shot up through the leagues, earning promotion from Step 9 to 8 in their second season as Bury FC, before narrowly beating Avro to the title on the final day to earn promotion from step 8 to step 7 of the English Pyramid. So far this season, Bury sit in the mid table after taking their focus off the league and onto both the FA Cup and FA Trophy.
