Avro take the short journey to Moston tomorrow afternoon to face local rivals FC United of Manchester, who aren’t doing all to great this season. Last time out for the Ro it was a 5-3 win at the Vestacare Stadium against Stockton Town, who almost completed the comeback had it not been for Benito Lowe scoring in the 88th minute to make 5-3 and complete his hat-trick.
Since 2019, FC United of Manchester have been stuck in the Northern Premier League Premier Division after suffering relegation from the National League North back during the 2018/2019 season. Last season, the Red Rebels finished in 3rd place and were in a title fight for most of the season against Hednesford Town and eventual champions Hebburn Town. Unfortunately, the playoffs were a moment to forget for FC United as they were defeated 3-2 by Warrington Rylands. FC United of Manchester come into this game after a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of Redcar Athletic.

FC United of Manchester:
Founded in 2005, FC United of Manchester’s history has seen a major rise up the non-league Pyramid since their formation as a protest against Manchester United’s owners, the Glazer Family. The club began in the North West Counties Football League, but wouldn’t take long to get out of the NWCFL as they earned back-to-back promotions and saw themselves join the Northern Premier League for the 2007/008 campaign. Their first season in the Northern Premier League Division One North saw them finish in the playoff places and subsequently defeat both Bamber Bridge and Skelmersdale United to earn a third promotion in three years. Although not earning promotion straight away as they did before, the Red Rebels managed to earn promotion to the National League North in the 2014/2015 season, and this promotion happened just as their current home ground, Broadhurst Park, would finally be opened to the public. Unfortunately, FC United would be relegated back to the NPL in the 2018/2019 season after four seasons in the 6th tier of English Football. Last season was their best season in the NPL since their return to the division as they featured in a title fight for the majority of the season and played in the playoffs, but fell short of both the title and promotion. The start of the season has not been great for the Red Rebels, but it’s too early to tell if they are in real trouble this season.

Avro and FC United of Manchester have crossed paths once before, but not in the competition you think. The Ro and The Red Rebels faced each other for a place in the Fenix Trophy Final back on March 10th 2025, where it ended with FC United winning 2-1 and progressing to the final to face eventual champions Caledonian Braves.
