Match Report: Avro 5-3 Lancaster City

Avro started life without Grant Shenton with a stunning 5-3 win over Lancaster City Wednesday night and saw the club move to second in the table

Five minutes into the match, Adam Owen sent the ball over to Darren Ehimamiegho, who excellently controlled the ball down before beating his man and playing a low cross into the box for Avro’s number 10, Harry Salt. Salt, left unmarked, easily slotted the ball into the back of the net and put the Ro ahead.

In the 17th minute, a lobbed ball over the top of the Avro defence found Lancaster City winger Steven Yawson, who volleyed the ball with insane precision into the bottom left corner for the equaliser, showing that the Dolly Blues won’t go down without a fight.

Around the 30th minute mark, Ryley Smith got on the end of a rebound after Harry Salt’s initial shot was saved by City’s keeper Brad Kelly. Smith easily put the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-1 to the Ro.

Just before half-time, Lancaster City whipped the ball into the box looking for a equaliser and, fortunately for the visitors, Charlie Bailey won the ball before spinning around and smashing the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 2-2.

Around the 50th minute mark, Ryley Smith once again got on the end of another rebounded shot off the Brad Kelly, but this time instead of simply slotting the ball into the back of the net, he decided to take a few touches before chipping the keeper and putting the Ro back in the lead.

In the 66th minute, Lancaster City’s captain Sam Bailey was left unmarked on the right-hand side of the box as the ball came flying in from the left flank. The Captain made contact with the ball and sent it bouncing into the bottom left corner to make it 3-3 and give the visitors their third equaliser of the night.

However, not long after that goal, Max Harrop was given enough space to have a go from a long way out. His shot was on target, but it looked like Brad Kelly would save it; the ball deflected off a Lancaster City player and rocketed towards the post, where it bounced in to make it 4-3 to Avro.

With five minutes of added time, Avro had one last chance to kill the game off. The ball was chipped into the box for Jacob Holland-Wilkinson, who headed the ball into the net to make it 5-3 and confirmed not only the win, but the three points for the Ro.
